Winnipeg’s Portage and Main has been called the crossroads of Canada and one of the most fabled intersections in the country, but for nearly 40 years the intersection has been a thoroughfare for vehicles only, with pedestrians prohibited from crossing at street level and instead forced into underground passages to navigate across. The City of Winnipeg is exploring opening the intersection to pedestrian crossings, a process that has garnered significant controversy and public debate.
