GLASSBORO — A specialty yogurt shop, Yapple Yogurt, has been announced as the second retailer to join the Whitney Center on Rowan Boulevard.

Yapple Yogurt will encompass 1,070 square feet in the Whitney Center and will serve a wide variety of yogurt, including sugar-free, gluten-free, dairy-free and kosher options.

“Rowan Boulevard is a unique location, and the selection process was very competitive,” said Andy Lin, co-founder of Yapple Yogurt. “The best part is that it’s not just something right off campus that people from the university will venture to, it’s also in a location that’s becoming a neighborhood center. We think it will be a great environment for Yapple Yogurt.”

The yogurt store is set to open by the end of 2011. As part of Yapple’s marketing program, the store will be working with the local school system to offer yogurts as prizes for a read-a-book program and discounted yogurts to reward honor roll students. The store also will assist local PTAs, sports teams and other charitable organizations with fundraising campaigns and offer a frequent buyer program.

According to Lin, the yogurt includes live and active cultures, making it a healthier option than some other desserts.

“Frozen yogurt is our biggest seller and our main product,” said Lin. “The drink line complements the yogurt. We want our product to be fast, easy and enjoyable with a focus on the health aspect as well. We want to offer something for everyone, so there is no restriction for who can come to our door.”

Lin said he believes Yapple Yogurt was chosen by the development firm — Live-Work-Learn-Play — because of the business’s detail-oriented, customer-based nature. Yapple Yogurt already has locations in Wynnewood and Langhorne, Pa. and Brick, N.J., with an additional location in Westfield opening soon.

Yapple Yogurt is the second retailer this month to announce its location in the Whitney Center, the first mixed-use retail building on the borough’s $300 million Rowan Boulevard revitalization project. Burger restaurant Prime is also set to open in the center by the end of this year.

The boulevard is forming a new 26-acre, pedestrian-friendly corridor stretching a third of a mile from the foot of the Rowan University campus to the center of downtown. A new Rowan University student housing campus has already opened at the top of the boulevard, along with the largest Barnes & Noble Collegiate Superstore in the state.

“We’re very excited,” said Lin. “It’s been a very long selection process, about half a year, and we’re eager to come in.”
